The Quercus macrocarpa - Bur Oak is definitely an impressive sight to behold. With a coarsely textured crown, wild and wooly acorns and a massive truck with rough and deeply furrowed bark, it is definitely leaving an impression. Usually wider than tall, the Bur Oak is a great choice for parks, institutional grounds, and expansive yards. The Bur Oak yields acorns that are larger than most others, with a conspicuously fringed cap that extends about halfway down the nut.

To plant a Bur Oak tree, choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and of the same depth, making sure the top of the root ball aligns with the ground surface. Water regularly, especially during the first year, and apply mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Protect the tree from herbivores, and minimal pruning is necessary for healthy growth.
