The Prunus Americana - American Plum is a native fruit tree. The plum sprouts runners that form a thicket shrub appearance or can be shaped into a small tree with a short trunk. Though it does vary by type, their spreading branches can have thorns or short sharp spurs. Foliage is long wedge-shaped, medium green, double toothed leaves. Leaves change to shades of yellow or red in autumn. Blooms white clusters of showy small white flowers in the springtime and produces yellowy skin plums in late summer that ripen to a shiny red shade from august to September.

The American Plum has a sweet and tart, sometimes bitter, flavor to them. Though most wildlife seek the structure for shelter or to graze on leaves, this fruit can be eaten fresh or is excellent for making into jellies, preserves, desserts, or even wine.
