Cornus florida - White Flowering Dogwood is most commonly know for its white "flowers" that bloom in late spring. What most people don't know is that these supposed "flowers" are actually modified leaves called bracts that surround a cluster of about 20 tiny yellow flowers and appear like flower petals, similar to the poinsettia. In summer, these bracts fall of to display the glossy green ovate leaves that adorn the trees branches. Once autumn comes around those flowers bear small crimson red berries and the leaves turn a red-purple shade. Winter, once all the foliage falls, its textured, silvery bark is left on display to be truly admired and appreciated.
