The Buxus Microphylla var. Japonica Japanese Boxwood is broadleaf evergreen shrub native to Japan and Taiwan, also commonly called 'little leaf box'. This slow growing boxwood is adorned with simple, green, obovate leaves that grow in an opposite arrangement style. This little shrub is not only an all season evergreen that never loses its color but also flowers in spring time with small creamy-green blooms that are semi-fragrant and attract pollinators. When grown in full sun, the green leaves are susceptible to sunburn and can turn from green to red.

Hardiness zone: 6 - 9

Characteristics: Grows in a dense, rounded shape. Can be pruned all year round but avoid pruning in late fall. Provide about an inch of insulation for change in temperatures and moisture control. Low maintenance, except pruning which is optional. Protect from intense sun and harsh winds in winter.

Growth Rate: Slow

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Moist, cool, rich, well draining pH 6.0-8.0. Tolerant to cold and drought once established. Deer and rabbit resistant. Though unnecessary, fertilize in the second growth year in early spring with a slow release fertilizer.
