Size

Broccoli is a stout, thick-stemmed plant in the Brassicaceae family, which also includes cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts. Large, blue-gray leaves are leathery and oblong, arranged around an upright trunk-like structure that supports a flowering head. The part we eat is actually the buds of the broccoli flower. If left unharvested, the broccoli head would open into small greenish-yellow flowers.

Broccoli has a moderate growth rate. It is typically planted in the early to mid-spring for an early summer harvest. And in warm climates, a late summer planting can yield a fall harvest.

Additional features: Edible and Container Friendly

Size: Can reach up to 30" inches tall

Light: Full Sun (6+ hours of direct light)

Water & Soil: Prefers moist, loamy, well-draining soil with an acidic to neutral soil pH

Native to the Mediterranean & Asia

Planted as a Biennial or annual vegetable.

Planting: Space plant 12"-20" inches apart.
Companion plants include, potatoes, onions and chamomile.

Care: Mix compost into the soil mix before planting to improve soil nutrients. Broccoli does best in temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees. Keep soil moist but not soggy.

Harvesting: Broccoli may be harvested once their heads reach the size of a large first. If you wait to long the buds will open causing a bitter taste. Best time to harvest is early morning as heads and stalks will be their firmest. Cut a 45 degree angle, 6 inches of stalk below the head. If there are side shoots growing you may leave those to continue to mature.

Wash broccoli and store in fridge for 5-7 days.
