The Malus Domestica 'Jonagold' -Ā 'Jonagold' AppleĀ is a cultivar cross between the crisp 'Golden Delicious' and blush-crimson 'Jonathan'. Known for its thin skin, large size, and balanced sweet-tart flavor, this apple is a staple classic. Jonagold have a light red fruit that is ready to harvest in mid-September to late October. They are resistant to cedar-apple rust, and cedar-hawthorn rust.Ā 

TheĀ JonagoldĀ apple needs at least two other varieties ofĀ apple treesĀ for cross-pollination.

Characteristics: Needs another variety of apple to pollinate. Has a chill hours (CU) requirement of 500-1,000. (Chill hours are the average hours of air temperature between 32Ā° and 45Ā° F in a typical winter season.) Produces fruit in 2-3 years.

Growth Rate: Moderate

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Does well in sandy soils but can grow well in a wide range of fertile soil with pH of 6.5-7.0. Water only when the top two inches of soil is dry. Prune in late winter to promote growth and shape the tree. Fertilize in fall.

Discovered in 1968 at the NY State Agricultural Experiment Station when crossbreeding the Golden Delicious and Jonathan variety. Due to its cold hardiness this variety has become extremely popular in Western Europe and Belgium, making up approximately 70% of the apples grown.
