The Viburnum Plicatum Var. Tomentosum 'Mariesii' - 'Mariess' Viburnum, also called the wedding cake bush and Doublefile Viburnum, is a large, multi-stemmed, wide, rounded forming shrub. Horizontal branches give a beautiful tier look, large white lacecap-like flower clusters and sharp toothed, oval, dark green leaves. Flowers bloom in flat, pure white clusters from April to May giving the impression of snow on the branches and are much enjoyed by butterflies and hummingbirds. These flower then give way to small, scarlet red fruits in the summer months which are enjoyed by birds in the colder months. In autumn, these lush green leaves becomes a deep maroon to vivid red, going out in a fiery autumnal show of saturated reds. 

Full sun to partial sun.

    Size: Mature size can reach 8'- 16' x 12'- 15'

    Light: Full sun to partial shade

    Hardiness zone: 5 - 8

    Characteristics: Grows in a large, rounded multi-stemmed shrub with horizontally grown branches decorated in dark green leaves and flat, white flower clusters. Blooms from April to May in most zones. Produces berries after flowering season which are loved by birds. Flowers are magnets for butterflies and hummingbirds. Fall colors of maroon to red.

    Growth Rate: Moderate to fast

    Soil, Water, Fertilize: Moist, loamy, well-draining soil with the pH 5.6-6.6 but tolerates any medium-moisture, well draining soil. Tolerant to heat and draught. Prune right after blooming period to promote growth and shape the tree but avoid damaging buds and berries. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, time released fertilizer. Relatively disease and pest free.
