Cymbopogon, also known as lemongrass, barbed wire grass, silky heads, Cochin grass, Malabar grass, oily heads, citronella grass or fever grass, is a genus of Asian, African, Australian, and tropical island plants in the grass family. Lemongrass grows best in full sun even in hot climates. At least six hours of direct sun per day will meet the plants' energy needs. Be aware that this plant contains cyanogenic glycosides and other oils that are mildly toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.

Characteristics: Lemongrass is fragrant and also known as a pest repellent. The smell of the plant's oil seems to deter unwanted insects, such as mosquitos.

Water & Soil: Rich, well draining soil.

Choose a Sunny Spot: Lemongrass thrives in full sun, needing at least six hours of sunlight daily.

Well-Draining Soil: Plant in rich, well-draining soil with a neutral pH. Amend soil with compost or organic matter to improve fertility.

Water Regularly: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Lemongrass loves humidity and moisture.

Space Properly: Space plants or clumps about 24 inches apart to allow for growth and air circulation.

Fertilize Lightly: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting and throughout the growing season.

Mulch: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the roots warm.

Prune: Trim regularly to encourage bushy growth and remove any yellowing or dead leaves.
