Ficus Carica 'Celeste' - Celeste Fig tree, sometimes called Celestial or Sugar fig, is known for producing delicious, sweet fruit with rose colored to violet skin. This variety is more cold hardy than most other types of figs and is a favorite to grow in California and throughout the southeastern United States. It is also heat tolerant. The small to medium-sized fruit is sweet like sugar with a smooth rich flavor. The outside skin is purplish-bronze to light brown and the flesh is rose-colored. When ripens in July, it is a "closed eye" that helps resist insects entering the fruit and spoilage. It is good for eating fresh.Â
This tree is known for being self-fertile, as well as pest and disease resistant. It is a closed eye fig, meaning the small hole that naturally exists at the apex of the fruit is closed, keeping out natural pests like wasps. Having a closed eye, the Celeste Fig can produce more ripe fruit that doesn’t spoil during the growing season.
