The Schlumbergera Truncata - 'Christmas Cactus' or Thanksgiving Cactus is also called Crab Cactus or False Christmas Cactus, is a winter-flowering, house plant that has become a popular holiday gift due to its ease of propagation and care.

Grows as a trailing/drooping plant and tends to do best when allowed to hang and encourage stem growth. Humidity is important as this is a tropical origin succulent, native to South America and not a typical arid-loving cactus. Do not let the soil run dry, but be careful to not let it set in wet soil for long periods at a time. Adapts well to low light environments but is more apt to produce blooms when exposed to brighter light, though too much direct light can cause sunburn and cause the leaves to yellow.

Bloom from November to December, with the possibility to rebloom in February.

Color: Green serrated margin stems called cladodes. Bloom tubular flowers in shades of pink, red and cream.

Size: Can grow 6-12" tall and 12-24" wide

Soil: Well-draining cactus mix

Water: Consistent watering during blooming season and high humidity. Allow to slightly dry before watering but not completely.

Light: Requires bright indirect sun during blooming season. Minimum of 13hrs of uninterrupted darkness in order to bloom.

Fertilize: Fertilize during periods of growth or blooming. Do not fertilize during periods when buds appear till they bloom or during dormancy period.

Insects & Pests: Aphids, red spider mites, scale, and mealybugs are common insect pests.

These are in fact epiphytic succulents, despite their name, and are native to the tropical rainforests of southern Brazil. Here they grow on tree branches and bask in the high humidity, dappled sunlight and warm climate.
