Castanea Dentata x Mollissima -Ā Hybrid American Chestnut treeĀ is the result in the search for a blight-resistant chestnut through a breeding program for eventual reforestation. Because the original American Chestnut was near extinction due to a fatal, quick spreading fungal infection in the 1950's, this hybrid was created to not only be more disease hardy but keep all the characteristics of the original chestnut tree.

The leaves to this deciduousĀ Castanea DentataĀ "Hybrid" - Hybrid American ChestnutĀ tree are a matte green andĀ lanceolate-shaped with prominent teeth, these later turn to shades of yellow, gold or brown during autumn months. BloomsĀ creamy-white long catkins That can grow 4ā€ to 8" in the summer and release a sweet fragrance.Ā Once pollinatedĀ clusterĀ of sharp, spiny green bur or cupule emerge turn to a yellowish-brown once mature. Inside are multiple edible nuts that have a dark brown shiny husk, flattened side and pointed edge with a creamy-white spongey texture and buttery, sweet, nutty flavor.

Legacy Trees

Trees were a gift for my daughter to plant on her 4-acre homesite. They arrived quickly and were in great condition. The instructions were brief and omitted any mention of proper spacing, other than that we are very satisfied with our purchase. Trees are in the ground and winter is approaching, so now we wait 5 to 7-years to roast some chestnuts!

Chestnut Trees

I bought three Chestnut trees and while they came well packed, I thought they were a little shorter than I expected. I hope they make it through the winter.

Add to the orchard

We plabnted a bunch of fruit trees with our grandchildren this summer, adding nut trees to feed the turkeys deer bear and other wildlife is a no brainer. We are a 40 acre tree farm!

American Chestnut

Were shipped very fast. Couple of days and here. I planted them the very next morning. Have constructed a deer proof mylar/webbing/wire and wood frame bunker system. They do not seem to have any transplant shock.

Hybrid American Chestnut Tree

Widely used at the turn of the 20th century; the fruit fattened up livestock, and the timber from a single tree filled entire railroad carts. But in the early 1900's a lethal, fast-spreading fungus was accidentally introduced while importing trees, known as Chestnut Blight, and our native trees were highly susceptible to. By the 1950's, the once large population dwindled to an alarming few diseased saplings. Amid the news, a breeding program was developed to create a disease hardy tree with the characteristics of our old chestnut. In their efforts, a hybrid was made using the disease-resistant Chinese Chestnut, allowing for promising reforestation efforts and the discovery of a few surviving old American Chestnuts that are still standing.
