The Syringa x Oblata 'Betsy Ross' - Betsy Ross Lilac was the first lilac released by the U.S National Arboretums's Breed program for disease resistant lilacs that thrive in warmer climates. Producing large cluster of extremely fragrant, pure white blooms on the tips of the branches in early spring. This sun loving lilac makes for a wonderful showpiece in your garden, filling your garden with pollinators such as bees, butterflies as well as hummingbirds.

Hardiness Zone

Betsy Ross Lilac grows well in USDA zones 4–8 and is suited for regions with cold winters and moderate summers. Trees planted outside of these zones may struggle to thrive.

Growth & Care

This compact, deciduous shrub reaches about 6–8 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded shape. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and benefits from light pruning after flowering to maintain shape and encourage strong blooming.

Blooms & Scent

Betsy Ross Lilac produces large clusters of pure white blooms in mid to late spring, filling the air with a strong, classic lilac fragrance. The flowers are long-lasting and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Size: Mature size can reach up to 10’ft high and 10'ft wide

Light: Prefers full sun

Characteristics: Spreading, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub. Fragrant flower clusters bloom from the tips of branches in a pure white shade. Attracts pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Easy to care for and maintain.

Hardiness Zone: 4 - 8

Soil: Rich, fertile, well-drained with pH ranging between 6.0-7.5. More heat tolerant than other varieties and disease resistant. Water in periods of drought. Pruning after flowering periods is recommended but not necessary, but timing is important as they bloom on old growth. Fertilize lilacs in late winter.

Requires at least 6-8 hours a day in order to bloom.

Best to plant in late fall or early spring after last freeze. Will require more watering if planting during the warmer months.
