Apple Tree 'McIntosh'

Accidentally discovered in Ontario, Canada, in the 19th century by John McIntosh on his plot of land while clearing the property. It was unusual to find apple trees that could survive such cold climates and are believed to have been developed from some discarded European apple varieties. Once transplanted near to his home, the tree produced fruit and bore a sweet-tart, crisp, bi-color apple never before seen and loved by his family. It wasn't until his sons discovered that in order to produce like fruit, the McIntosh had to be grafted, not grown from seed. This versatile apple has since gained popularity, became the national apple of Canada, and is still a preferred snacking treat.
