Asparagaceae Empress Wu Hosts will eventually mature to 4-5' tall and spread to 6-8' wide with huge, deeply veined, green leaves to 28" long by 25" wide. Leaves emerge blue-green in spring but lose the waxy coating and blue tint as they mature by summer to matte or slightly shiny green.

In mid-summer it is topped with lavender flowers on stem 5' tall! What a glorious sight in a partly shaded garden!

Part sun to full shade

Size: Mature size can reach up to 5'ft tall & 8'ft wide

Light: Partial sun - partial shade

Hardiness zone: 3 - 8

Characteristics: Large to extra large size Hosta. Huge dark, deeply veined leaves grow in a clumping form. Has the ability to flower in mid to late summer, fragrant clusters of purple flower buds that emerge horizontally on short flower stems from the clusters. These herbaceous perennials die back in the winter months and reemerges every year during early spring. Attracts hummingbirds, bees, butterflies and other pollinators, as well as birds.

Growth rate: Moderate

Soil & Water: Prefers moist, water-retentive, fertile soil with pH of 6.5 - 7.0. Sensitive to heat and direct harsh sun. Water in periods of drought. Does not do well in compact soil. Recommended to prune spent flowers. When in dormancy water periodically, do not allow to dry out.

Flower scapes can be snipped to bring blooms indoors.

Divide plants in late summer or early spring. Division should have at least 3 eyes. Allow several years before dividing.

Potted dormant perennials can be kept in a well-lit cool/cold area (i.e. garage, shed, even in a protected area outdoors) until ready for spring planting. Do not allow them to completely dry out.
