Water & Soil: Plant in fertile, evenly moist and well draining soil. his should be considered a permanent bed. Soil should be fertile and well-drained with a pH range of around 6.0-6.8 is desired. Add organic matter (such as aged cow or horse manure, prior to planting). Place rows 3'-4' apart to ensure room for growth; Place cuttings in the soil with the buds facing up – flush or just below (up to 1") the soil surface.

Rhubarb produces a harvest for up to 8 years, so grow it in a sunny area where it will go undisturbed for a long time.

Give rhubarb room to spread out by planting them 4 to 6 feet apart.

Improve your native soil by mixing in several inches of aged compost or other rich organic matter.

When hot weather arrives, apply a 2-inch layer of mulch to keep soil moist and help block weeds.

Check soil moisture regularly and water when the top inch of soil becomes dry.

Feed rhubarb regularly with a continuous-release plant food.

If you’re unable to plant rhubarb roots due to frozen ground, here’s how to store them until the soil is ready:

Prepare a Storage Medium: Place the roots in a container filled with slightly damp peat moss, sawdust, or sand. This will help keep the roots from drying out. Avoid excess moisture to prevent mold or rot.

Store in a Cool, Dark Location: Keep the container in a place that’s consistently cool, like a basement, garage, or refrigerator. Aim for a temperature between 32°F and 40°F (0°C and 4°C) to keep the roots dormant.

Check Periodically: Every few weeks, inspect the roots for any signs of mold or rot. Lightly mist the storage medium if it becomes too dry, but be careful not to over-water.

Plant When the Ground Thaws: As soon as the soil is workable, plant the rhubarb roots in their permanent location. Rhubarb is hardy, so it should adapt well once planted in early spring.
