Size: Mature size can reach up to 3"inch globes

Hardiness: 3 - 9

Characteristics: Good storing onion. Excellent flavor that is a favorite for cooking.

Watering:
Maintain consistently moist soil, but avoid waterlogging. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to promote large bulb formation.

Fertilizing:
Fertilize 2-3 weeks after planting with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Stop fertilizing once the onions start bulbing, as too much nitrogen can inhibit bulb growth.

Weeding:
Keep the area weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture. Use shallow cultivation to avoid disturbing onion roots.
Mulching:

Apply mulch around the plants to help conserve moisture, control weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Harvesting:
Karmen Red onions are ready to harvest when the tops turn yellow and begin to fall over, typically after 3-4 months. Pull the onions, allow them to dry in a shaded area, and cure for a few weeks in a well-ventilated spot.

Storage Instructions
Curing: After harvesting, cure Karmen Red onions by placing them in a dry, shaded, and well-ventilated area for 2-3 weeks.

Storage Location: Store cured onions in a cool, dry place with good airflow, like a cellar or pantry. Avoid storing them in plastic bags; use mesh or paper bags for best results.

Temperature: Aim for storage temperatures between
32°F and 40°F (0°C and 4°C) to extend shelf life.

Important: Open the package immediately upon arrival to ensure the onion sets are in good condition and ready for planting.

Timing:
Plant Karmen Red onion sets in early spring as soon as the soil is workable. For regions with mild winters, fall planting is also possible.

Site Selection:
Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Karmen Red onions thrive in full sunlight and need a spot with consistent exposure.

Soil Preparation:
Amend the soil with compost or a balanced vegetable fertilizer if needed. Karmen Red onions prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.

Planting Depth and Spacing:
Plant each onion set about 1 inch deep with the pointed end facing upward.
Space sets 4-6 inches apart in rows that are about 12 inches apart to allow room for bulb growth and airflow.

Open Immediately!

The onions were packaged in airtight plastic bags and I did not open them in a timely manner and all the onions bulbs were wet and moldy. OPEN IMMEDIATELY AND TAKE OUT OF THE PLASTIC BAGS. I had to throw them away.

Dear Joe,

Thank you for your review. As emphasized in our shipping instructions, it is crucial to open and inspect live plant orders immediately upon arrival. Waiting 50 days to open your package resulted in the moldy and wet onion bulbs you encountered.

We urge all customers to follow the provided instructions to ensure the health and quality of their plants. Delays in opening the packaging can lead to the issues you described.

Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards,
