 A stately, strong, and long-lived tree with beautiful fall color, the Shumard oak is a great selection for yards. This adaptable species has been successfully grown in urban areas where air pollution, poor drainage, compacted soil, and/or drought are common, making it a fine choice for street trees as well. Deer and squirrel also love its small acorns.

    When planting a Shumard Oak tree (Quercus shumardii), choose a well-drained site with full sun exposure to promote healthy growth. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, plant the tree at the same depth as it was in the nursery, and water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.
