Native to North America

Characteristics: Fruit resembles a cross of banana & mango

Growth Rate: Moderate

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Moist, fertile, well draining soil, slightly acidic to neutral. Keep moist but not soggy. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in spring.

Planting: Choose a location with well-draining soil that receives partial shade. Pawpaws prefer slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough to accommodate the roots of the sapling. Gently place the tree in the hole and backfill with soil, ensuring that the graft union (if present) is above the soil level.

Watering: Water the sapling regularly during the first year, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Pawpaws have shallow root systems, so regular watering is crucial for their establishment.

Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or compost, around the base of the sapling. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weed growth, and regulates soil temperature.

Fertilizing: Pawpaws have specific nutrient requirements. In the first year, use a balanced organic fertilizer with a ratio of 10-10-10 or similar. Apply it in early spring and mid-summer, following the package instructions. Avoid over-fertilization, as it can harm the tree.
