Size: Mature size can reach up to 3"inch globes

Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist, avoiding waterlogging. Regular watering, especially during dry periods, will promote large bulb formation.
Fertilizing:

Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer 2-3 weeks after planting. Stop fertilizing once the onions start to bulb, as too much nitrogen at this stage can inhibit bulb growth.
Weeding:

Keep the area free from weeds to prevent competition for nutrients and water. Use shallow cultivation to avoid disturbing onion roots.

Mulching:
Apply a layer of mulch to help retain moisture, control weeds, and stabilize soil temperature around the plants.

Harvesting:
Stuttgarter Yellow onions are ready for harvest when the tops turn yellow and begin to fall over, usually 3-4 months after planting. Pull the onions, allow them to dry in a shaded area, and cure for a few weeks in a well-ventilated location.

Curing: After harvesting, cure Stuttgarter Yellow onions in a dry, shaded, and well-ventilated spot for 2-3 weeks.

Storage Location: Once cured, store onions in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area like a cellar or pantry. Use mesh or paper bags instead of plastic to promote airflow.

Temperature: Store at temperatures between 32°F and 40°F (0°C and 4°C) for extended shelf life

Important: Open the package immediately upon arrival to ensure the onion sets are in good condition and ready for planting.

Timing:
Plant Stuttgarter Yellow onion sets in early spring as soon as the soil is workable. In mild winter regions, fall planting is also an option.
Site Selection:

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Stuttgarter Yellow onions need full sunlight to grow strong and healthy.

Soil Preparation:
Prepare the soil with compost or a balanced vegetable fertilizer if needed. These onions thrive in slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.

Planting Depth and Spacing:
Plant each onion set about 1 inch deep with the pointed end facing up.
Space sets 4-6 inches apart in rows about 12 inches apart to give each bulb room to develop.

Yellow onions require a substantial amount of watering. Roughly 30” per growing season is recommended.

If the onion tops become cracked or the soil around the bulbs appears dry, they need more water. If the stalks become a yellowish color, they are being overwatered.

Avoid watering directly overhead (like with a hose). This can damage the stalks. Instead, water directly onto the soil or use irrigation hoses or deliver water at the base of the plant.
