Philadelphus coronarius, or Mock Orange, is a deciduous shrub known for its highly fragrant white blooms that appear in late spring. The clusters of 5–7 citrus-scented flowers resemble orange blossoms, giving the plant its common name. With an upright, arching habit and dark green oval leaves, it grows 6–10 feet tall and wide. Easy to grow in full sun to partial shade, Mock Orange adds classic charm and strong fragrance to borders, hedges, and pollinator-friendly landscapes.

Product Features

Hardiness Zone

Mock Orange grows well in USDA zones 4–8 and thrives in temperate regions with cold winters and mild to warm summers. Plants planted outside of these zones may struggle to thrive.

Growth & Care

This deciduous shrub typically grows 6–10 feet tall and 6–8 feet wide, with an upright, arching form. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, though it tolerates a range of soil types. Prune immediately after blooming to encourage next year’s flowers and maintain shape.

Blooms & Scent

In late spring to early summer, Mock Orange produces an abundance of creamy white, four-petaled flowers with a powerful orange-blossom fragrance. The blooms are highly attractive to bees and pollinators, and make excellent cut flowers.

Classic Charm & Versatility

A longtime favorite in cottage and heirloom gardens, Mock Orange is valued for its intensely fragrant blooms, low maintenance, and old-fashioned appeal. Use it as a specimen shrub, in mixed borders, or as an informal flowering hedge.
