Characteristics: Grows into a small tree or a dense, multi-stemmed shrub. In spring, it produces clusters of small white flowers, followed by dark purple-blue edible berries in summer that attract birds and butterflies.

Growth Rate: Moderate

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Prefers moist, well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a pH of 5.5-7.0 but tolerates various soil types. Fertilize after blooming, twice a year. Light pruning for size and shape is recommended.

Plant your Allegheny Serviceberry in full sun to partial shade with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, plant at the same depth as in its container, backfill, and water deeply. Mulch around the base, water regularly during the first year, and fertilize in spring. Prune lightly in late winter as needed.
