Platanus Occidentalis - American Sycamore Tree is a large, fast growing shade tree native to North America. The mottled bark is often the most distinguishing trait, when the brown outer bark is peeled away from the trunk a lighter-colored inner bark is revealed. As the tree matures the trunk typically becomes hollow and provides all types of wildlife with shelter. Sycamores also displays large, broad, flat green leaves that can reach up to 10" wide, are divided into 3 or 5 lobes, and have coarsely toothed edges. Develops seed pods, which takes the form of a fuzzy, globular ball and provides food for wildlife.

Attracts birds, bees and butterflies.

Native to North America.

Characteristics: Grows in a broad, out-reaching canopy that provides heavily dense shade. Highly distinguishable mottled color bark, reminiscent of camouflage. Large, broad, flat green leaves that turn golden yellow in autumn. Produces fuzzy, globular ball-like seed pods. Easily adaptable and low maintenance.

Growth Rate: Fast

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Moist, rich, well-draining pH 5.0-8.0. Tolerant to different types of soil, salt and drought. Fertilize in early spring. Pruning is only necessary when branches get damaged. Susceptible to aphids and fungal disease
