The Quercus Palustris - Pin Oak Tree is an easy to care for fast growing, pyramidal shape shade tree. This oak's name comes from the many short, pin-like branchlets on the main branches that, unlike other oaks, arch out and can sometimes droop. Has glossy, dark green leaves with 5-7 lobes that are separated by very deep sinuses, in autumn they turn a scarlet and bronze shade and some can persist through the winter. Produces insignificant brown flowers that fruit into small acorns and attract all types of wildlife. 

The national champion pin oak is 110' tall and resides in Tennessee.

Hardiness zone: 4 - 8

Characteristics: Easy to care for and maintain. Grows in a pyramidal shape with glossy, dark green leaves with 5-7 lobes that are separated by very deep sinuses. Produces acorns and attracts songbirds, wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, squirrels and ducks. Leaves turn shades of scarlet and bronze during autumn.

Native to North America

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Moist, rich, acidic, well-draining soil with the pH 5.0 - 6.5, is not tolerant to pH levels higher than 7.5. Tolerant to flooding, sulfur dioxide, and urban conditions to some extent. Prune in late winter during dormancy to promote growth and shape the tree.
Susceptibility: iron chlorosis in high pH soils, scale, two-lined chestnut borer, bacterial leaf scorch and gypsy moth.

Pin oak will tolerate wet soils, but prefers moist, rich, acidic, well-drained soils. It does well in full sun and tolerates urban conditions
