Malus domestica ' Yates' - Yates apple a small red apple that is very firm with dotted skin. The Yates apple has a juicy aromatic flesh with excellent taste. The Yates apple tree is very easy to grow and a favorite for wildlife. It is a small apple but a heavy producer that ripens in late September to mid October. It is good for applesauce as well as baking.

The Yates apple tree is a heavy bearing apple; it is self-pollinating and a good pollinator for most apples. Can benefit from having other apple trees or crabapples nearby to cross-pollinate for a more bountiful harvest.

Full sun to partial sun.

Attracts birds, bees and butterflies.

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Moist and well draining soil with pH 6.0-7.0. Watering needs are normal. Normal is defined as regular watering to a depth of 18 inches, but periodically dries out in the top 7 inches between watering. Prune in late winter to promote growth and shape the tree. Fertilize in early spring.

This antique apple originated in Fayette County, Georgia before 1844 and was often called Red Warrior in the south. It has been used primarily for cider but has great flavor with pale red skin and dark stripes.
