The Platanus Occidentalis - American Sycamore Tree is a large, fast growing shade tree native to North America. The mottled bark is often the most distinguishing trait, when the brown outer bark is peeled away from the trunk a lighter-colored inner bark is revealed. As the tree matures the trunk typically becomes hollow and provides all types of wildlife with shelter. Sycamores also displays large, broad, flat green leaves that can reach up to 10" wide, are divided into 3 or 5 lobes, and have coarsely toothed edges. Develops seed pods, which takes the form of a fuzzy, globular ball and provides food for wildlife.
Tips:
It is best not to be planted in spaces smaller than 12' apart.
Naturally grows near bodies of water and is tolerant to wet areas.
Best to transplant during spring or fall months, but if extreme temperatures aren't an issue, can be planted all year round.
Full sun to partial sun.
Attracts birds, bees and butterflies.
