Callicarpa Americana - American Beautyberry is deciduous perennial shrub that is a member of the Lamiacae (mint) family and native to some parts of the United States, Bermuda and Cuba. Grows in has long, arching branches with oval shaped serrated leaves that grow in groups of 2 or 3's. This shrub produces small, dense clusters of pink flowers in spring before they fruit glossy, edible, iridescent, purple fruit that hug the branches at leaf axils from autumn well through winter. The berries are most commonly used in jellies, sauces and wines and attract all sorts of wildlife and pollinators.
This shrub was used in western medicine by the natives to cure all sorts of diseases and ailments as well as a bug repellent.
