The Populus Deltoides Cottonwood tree, also known as the "Poplar", is a part of the poplar family named for its cotton-like seed growth. This large deciduous tree is found throughout North America favoring moist areas like stream beds and lakefronts, but is highly adaptable and can be grown anywhere. Grows approximately 8'ft per year allowing it to make amazing shade and efficient windbreaks. Long, thick branches are decorated with beautiful triangular, green leaves that become a bright yellow in autumn. Only female trees produce the fluffy white seed material which cottonwoods are named after. 

Full sun to partial sun.

Native to North America

Drought tolerant once established.

Size: Mature size can reach 50' - 80' x 50' - 80'

Light: Full sun

Hardiness zone: 2 - 9

Characteristics: Grows in a open, spreading crown form. Bark is smooth and thin when young and matures into a grayish-brown, thick, deeply furrowed with scaly ridges. Has alternating simple green leaves with coarse, curved teeth that become a bright yellow in fall.

Growth Rate: Fast

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Moist, loamy, cool, rich, well draining pH 6.5 -7 though is very adaptable to different soils. Tolerant to sandy, silty, marshy areas but foes not do well in heavy clay. Prune in late winter during dormancy to promote growth and shape the tree and prevent possible breaking limbs.
