Cercis Canadensis - Eastern Redbud also called American Redbud, is a deciduous shade tree known for the profusion of rosy pink flowers in mid spring as early as 4 years of age. As summer approaches, reddish heart like leaves emerge later maturing into dark green and finally yellow in the fall before dropping in the winter. Produces brownish-black pods about 2" in length that remain on the tree throughout the winter.

Full sun to partial sun.

Attracts birds, bees and butterflies.

Native to North America

Drought tolerant once established.

Characteristics: This deciduous shade tree grows in a rounded, vase-like shape. Has reddish heart-shaped leaves that mature into a dark green shade and finally yellow in the fall. Attracts nectar-loving insects, early season butterflies, Select birds love the seeds and branches for nesting and shelters.

Growth Rate: Moderate to slow

Soil, Water, Fertilize: Moist, loamy, rich, sandy, clay and well-draining soil with the pH 7.5<. Tolerant to a variety of soils and drought. Water in periods of drought. Prune in late winter to promote growth and shape the tree. Fertilize in early spring.
