The Malus domestica ‘Stayman Winesap’ - Winesap apple is a very popular semi-dwarf winter keeper. Deep red with reddish purple stripes and a flavor that is tart but firm and crisp. This apple blooms pink blossoms in the spring and will be ready for harvest in late autumn to early winter. Winesap apples are great for baking and cooking due to their sei-tough texture.

Winesap Apple Trees begin bearing fruit at ages 2 - 5 years of age.

Size: Mature size can reach up to 12'-15' x 12'-15'.

Light: Full sun.

Hardiness Zone: 5 - 8 View Map

Characteristics: Has a chill hours (CU) requirement of 600–800. (Chill hours are the average hours of air temperature between 32° and 45° F in a typical winter season.) Needs a compatible cultivar growing within 50' for semi-dwarf to ensure pollination. Produces fruit in 4-6 years. Requires another variety to produces fruit.

Soil, Water, Fertilize: The Winesap apple grows well in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, silty loam and well-drained soil with pH 6.0-7.0. It is not drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter to promote growth and shape the tree. Fertilize in early spring.

*We cannot send plants to Alaska or Hawaii.

*Plants ship dormant in winter months.

Allow 15'ft of space between each apple tree.

Cross pollinates well with Yellow Delicious and Red Delicious.
