TheĀ Malus domesticaĀ ā€˜Red Jonathan' -Ā Jonathon Apple is a semi-dwarf tree blooming in the springtime and ripen from September to October. Jonathon Apple trees are not drought tolerant. These apples have a crisp sweet-tart taste and are one of the most commercially produced apples in the United States.

Will need another variety to cross pollinate with like theĀ Red Delicious or Yellow Delicious.Ā 

Full sun to partial sun.

Attracts birds, bees and butterflies.

Pink / White flowers, fragrant

Size: Semi-Dwarf tree reaches a size of 12'-15' x 12'-15'.

Light: Prefers Full sun

Hardiness zone: Can tolerate zone 4 - 8 View map

Characteristics: Yields ripe fruit typically from mid-September to mid-October. Needs a compatible cultivar, growing within 50'ft to ensure pollination. Blooms midseason, with white to light pink flowers.

Growth Rate: Moderate - 13"–24" per year

Soil, Water, Fertilize: The Jonathan apple grows well in moist, well-drained soil. It is not drought-tolerant. Has a chill hours (CU) requirement of 700–800. (Chill hours are the average hours of air temperature between 32° and 45° F in a typical winter season.) Produces fruit in 4-6 years. Prune in late winter to promote growth and shape the tree. Fertilize in early spring.
